What is Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT)?
Dance/Movement Therapy is a research-based allied health professional. DMT provides an agency for people to express themselves through music, movement and props. DMT offers the benefits of physical, emotional, social and cognitive support. Moreover, it encourages people to use movement communication to express themselves.
Common Dance/Movement Therapy Goals
Expression
Through movement with breath to support verbal and nonverbal self-expression and communication.
Social skills
Understanding nonverbal social cues, such as facial expression and actions.
Emotional
Identify different emotions and develop verbal or nonverbal ways to express.
Develop emotional regulation skills through dance and movement activity.
Physical
Develop spatial awareness or improve gross motor/ plan motor skills
Psychological
Through embodiment expression to reduce anxiety and depression.
Improve self-confidence via self-awareness and build a sense of mastery.
Dance Therapy Activities
DMT utilises various dance therapy methods according to the participant’s needs to address goals. No dance experience is needed to participate in the DMT session. Movement is an expressive language when humans are in utero.
